About Ms. Barany
I was born in New Jersey, grew up in Southern California, went to graduate school in Boston, and moved to Minnesota to do research in chemical physics. Both my children grew up here, but are now in college in upstate New York. My husband is a chemistry professor at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.

When I learned about the atom in seventh grade, I decided to be a scientist!  At that time, it was an unusual ambition for a girl. Fortunately, after the Russians launched Sputnik, there were plenty of opportunities for everyone in the United States to study science.

Education:
B.A. Occidental College, Chemistry and Mathematics
Ph.D. Brandeis University, Chemical Physics
Teaching Licensure  University of Minnesota, Physics and Chemistry, grades 7-12

I worked in Honeywell's corporate research lab for 13 years. During that time, I led a project to develop new ultraviolet detectors. We invented  a way to make boilers for large buildings, like schools and hospitals, safer.
