Gear Up Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) is a federally funded program that works in collaboration with teachers, community members, students, and families to significantly increase the number of students who are prepared to enter and succeed in post-secondary education. In 2005, GEAR UP began serving 850 students in three cohorts (classes of 2011) at Battle Creek Middle School, Hazel Park Middle School Academy, and Humboldt Jr. High in St. Paul, MN. Currently GEAR UP is serving students in the class of 2011 at Harding High School and Humboldt Senior High School in St. Paul. GEAR UP is hosted by St. Olaf College.
MEP The Saint Paul Public Schools Multicultural Excellence Program (MEP)
provides college preparatory support and access to scholarships for
students of color seeking post-secondary education.
MEP students are encouraged to pursue a rigorous,
pre-college program while in high school. The MEP staff will work
collaboratively with secondary and post secondary staff, parents, and
the community to provide strategies and resources to enhance MEP
students' academic performance and create positive self-esteem.
MEP begins in the 9th grade and continues through college. Students may apply in grades 9-10 with a grade
point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher. School counselors can
assist students with the application process. Students will be added
based on availability in the program. A maximum of 220 students per
grade level are admitted.
